| 99 Mage INDEX: INTRODUCTION...................................... .2nd post THE MAGE TRAINING ARENA..................3rd post ENCHANTER PORTAL..............................4th post ALCHEMIST PORTAL...............................5th post TELEKINETIC PORTAL.............................6th post GRAVEYARD PORTAL.............................7th post OTHER ALTERNATIVES...........................8th post ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ INTRODUCTION ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mage is a very useful skill to train because it is used in nearly all aspects of the game. From teleporting to the major cities of RuneScape to high alching for money to doing battle against the fearsome monsters of the game. Most people have the idea that it is an impossible skill to train to 99 because it costs so much and makes absolutely no profit. I wrote this guide for two main reasons, one, to crush the misconception that mage is impossible to train without losing millions of gold, and two, that mage makes no profit for the player. In this guide, I will be focusing on one method of training mage through the Mage Training Arena located north of the Duel Arena in Al Kharid. As I said above, I myself used this very method to achieve 99 Mage and I hope that all of you will use it too, because quite frankly, in my opinion, nothing beats it. However, let me say right from the start that it will not be an entertaining road you will be taking or one that is easy to do. It will be hard, and it will test your dedication to the skill; it might even make you want to stop playing RuneScape altogether. I know that I experienced days when I tried avoiding my computer, so that I wouldn't have to train mage. Me and a couple close friends in the game had a code word for the Arena. We called it the “prison in the desert." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE MAGE TRAINING ARENA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Mage Training Arena, or MTA, is located north of the Duel Arena in Al Kharid. Upon entering this fine facility, you will need to speak to a Gaurdian near the door from whom you shall need to request a "PROGRESS HAT" in order to begin your training. Fear not, for this costs no gold . Upon recieving your "PROGRESS HAT", you may proceed to the portals to the north and begin your training. The method of training is explained below. Have fun and enjoy yourself! The method is really quite simple. You play through the arena until you have enough points to purchase a Mage’s Book from the shop upstairs. You sell the book for around 3m and you buy the runes needed to play for another Mage’s Book. The runes alone only cost around 1.5m. So, every time you buy a Mage’s Book from the arena, you will not only gain about 800k mage xp (87+ mage), but also make a profit of 1.5mil (depending on Mage Book price) in the process. To start this method, you will need to buy the following the runes: 800 LAWS --> TELEKINETIC PORTAL 600 NATURES --> GRAVEYARD PORTAL 1800 NATURES --> ALCHEMY PORTAL **7000 COSMICS --> ENCHANTMENT PORTAL Give or take a few, because some players may not be as efficient as others, these numbers may not be accurate for everyone. **IF YOU ONLY ENCHANT D-STONES, YOU WONT NEED 7K COSMICS, YOU WILL NEED ABOUT 500-600 COSMICS FOR 6K ARENA POINTS TO BUY MAGE'S BOOK. * * ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ENCHANT PORTAL ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It’s the western-most portal in the MTA. In accordance with your magic level, pick the highest enchant spell you can cast. They range from level 1 Enchant spell (7 Mage) to level 6 Enchant spell (87 Mage). With any given spell, there are a number of elemental runes that are required (water, air, fire, earth). I suggest taking the appropriate staff to fulfill these runes. For example, if I’m going to be casting level 5 Enchant spell (69 Mage) which requires both water and earth runes, as well as cosmics, I would be inclined to purchase a Mud staff because it supplies an infinite number of water and earth runes. This is also the case with the level 6 Enchant spell which requires earth and fire runes, as well as cosmics; this is easily fulfilled with a Lava staff purchased from players or the Grand Exchange. After entering the Enchant Portal, you can go about earning points in two ways. You can either: A) pick up the dragonstones scattered around the room and enchant those; or B) enchant the “bonus” shape/color for points. Option A will save you cosmic runes and time. Option B will give you more mage xp. The dragonstones are untradeable, cannot be taken out of the room :P, and spawn every 10 minutes. The bonus shape changes every 30 seconds or so, and gives 1 arena point per enchant, and 5 arena points per 10 enchants. You can do option A by world hopping and enchanting the dragonstones in the enchant portal. But, if you are serious about training to 99 mage, I would suggest picking a favorite color/shape and just enchanting those (Option B). I, personally, spent many hours in the Enchant Portal, just enchanting the Gold Cubes in the North-western corner. At 87+ mage, it gives 72.5xp per enchant. That’s right, more than high alching, and surprisingly enough, cosmic runes are much cheaper than natures. OPTION A - 600 COSMICS OPTION B - 7000 COSMICS * * ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ALCH PORTAL ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It’s the northern portal in the MTA. In this room you will be using one of two spells: Low Alchemy (21 Mage) or High Alchemy (55 Mage). Both will wield the same results for the mini-game, but low alch will give you 31xp, while high alch will give u 65. Either way, grab nature runes and your trusty fire staff, and head to the Alch Portal. In this room, you will be required to alch different items that you find in the 8 cupboards. Each of these items is worth a certain amount of gold. The amount is given to you in a table to the top-right. Your aim is to alch the items that are worth the most (30gp). Turning in the money from these alchs, will reward you in points and mage xp. For every 100gp that you turn in to the deposit box to the north, you will receive 1 arena point. The range of items that you will need to alch are: Addy Helms, Addy Kites, Rune Longs, Leather Boots, and Emeralds. Each will be worth a certain amount of gold ranging from: 1gp, 5gp, 8gp, 15gp, and 30gp. There’s really no sure-fire way to play this portal. It’s all about luck. You’ll be traveling from cupboard to cupboard, opening and searching for items. The items you get are totally random and to top it all off, the costs of the items change every minute or so. My method has always been to stockpile on 2-3 items in your inventory. Say for example, you go to a cupboard and you find emeralds. Search the cupboard until you have 10-12 emeralds, then move on to another cupboard. Search that for (lets just say…) 10-12 leather boots and then wait until either emeralds or leather boots cost 30gp in the table to the top-right. As soon as either one is worth 30gp, start alching and rake in the gold. After you collect 5000 gold, I’d suggest that you go north, and deposit the wealth. You will receive 10,000 mage xp and 50 arena points. This room gives the most mage xp of all the portals, by far, but it requires thought & concentration. * ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TELEKINETIC ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Telekinetic is the southern-most portal. This is a pretty straight-forward portal, to be honest. The spell you will be using in this room is "Telekinetic Grab", hence the name :P. Once you enter the portal, you will notice a grid-like puzzle nearby. Look for the gray figure within this puzzle and select "Observe Guardian Statue". The screen will zoom out and give you an aerial view of the puzzle. Now, the object of the game is to move the gray figure from point A to point B. Point A, of course, is where the figure is already at rest. Point B, where the figure needs to be, is usually located at the other end of the puzzle. In order to move the figure, you will need to move your character to tactical positions around the puzzle and cast "Telekinetic Grab" on the gray figure. This will move the figure toward your character. Most puzzles can be solved by casting Telekinetic Grab 8-10 times. For every puzzle you complete, you will receive 2 Arena Points, and for every 5th puzzle you complete, you will receive 10 Arena Points. You will also receive small amounts of law runes here and there. This portal, by far, is one of the most boring of the lot, and will require much time to gain 500 points for Mage's Book. Furthermore, it is not good mage xp, so really, it's not good for anything O_o. However, if you want that mage book, you must get 500 Telekinetic points, which should take about 5 hours in total. 900 LAWS * * ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GRAVEYARD PORTAL ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It's the easter portal. Graveyard is a very annoying one, because you take constant 2 damage every 10-15 seconds. The object of this game is to transform bones that you pick up from nearby piles, into food products such as bananas or peaches. You will do this by using either "Bones to Bananas" or "Bones to Peaches", given that you've unlocked it from the shop upstairs. Both spells require Nature, Water, and Earth runes to cast. I'd suggest a Mud Staff if you have one (800k at GE), to save money on water and earth runes. This portal can be very hard to do without "Bones to Peaches" because of the constant 2 damage that your character will take. I would suggest that you unlock it ASAP, because peaches heal 8 hp and you can get away with eating 3 or 4 peaches every few loads. SO! You go into the Graveyard portal, run to the pile of bones on the ground that is nearest to the "Food Chute". Food Chutes are always located on a wall. Position yourself near it and pick up bones from the piles on the floor. Once you have 15 or so bones in your inventory, cast "Bones to Bananas". This should transform the bones in your inventory to, you said it, bananas :P. Run to the Food Chute and deposit the bananas. You will get 1 Arena Point (sometimes 2) for depositing 15+ bananas into the Chute. However, without a proper way of healing yourself, you will not be able to get many points in Graveyard. Which is why I'd like to stress that you get the arena points required for "Bones to Peaches" and buy it from the shop. It will save you SOOOOOOO MUCHHHH HEADACHE. Until you get the "Bones to Peaches" unlocked, I'd suggest taking food into the Graveyard Portal with you (Salmon/Lobs). This will allow you to last longer than usual but still not an effective way of getting points in this arena. 600 NATURES * * ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OTHER ALTERNATIVES ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There really aren’t many that will give you good and FAST xp but you’re welcome to try them. 1)Barrows – req. 55 slayer, slayer staff, CAST MAGIC DART 2)Metal Drags – req. high mage, chaos gauntlets (Family Crest Quest), CAST FIRE BOLT 3)Camelot Teleporting – req. LAWS 4)Tele-other party – req. SOUL RUNES 5)Pest Control - req. Inflict Damage in any style (ty Kilt) 6)Stunning/Cursing - req. spell-puppet***, SOUL or BODY RUNES 7)Alching - req. 55 Mage; alch things that will break you even such as Green D'hide Bodies. These alch for their cost, so all you really lose is the price of the nature runes, assuming that you bought them. I would also suggest alching your Summoning Pouches, which alch for 500+ gp which covers the cost of nature runes. Yew or Mage longs are also good choices, as long as you have a method of not losing too much money. ***SPELL PUPPET- this is basically an NPC that is the target of your Stun or Curse spell, however he cannot attack you back. Such NPCs include the Zamorak Mage on the first floor of Varrock Castle, the Lesser Demon on the third floor of the Wizard's Tower, and many others that I shall not mention here. The Zamorak Mage however is ideal for Stunning and Cursing. Just go easy on him, poor guy is caged :P * Last edited by kandymann3; 07-10-2008 at 06:04 AM. |
