| Tuski's range guide.
I found this guide on the official runescape forums. I did NOT write this guide. The writer of this guide is Tuski. So I decided I will help some people out, give advice on what I have found works well when it comes to leveling ranged, and what does not. I will start by addressing all the equipment I personally use, what I find helpful, and what I find useful. Equipment: My equipment varies on what I am doing. Training: Black Chest Black Chaps "Barrows" Gloves Ranger Boots Robin Hood Glory Amulet Obby Cape Crystal Bow "Safe" Mini Games: Karils Top Karils Skirt "Barrows" Gloves Ranger Boots Robin Hood Glory Obby Cape Crystal Bow Karils X-Bow Pking: Archer Helm Snake Skin boots Black hides Glory As everyone should know robin and rangers are far from required, in all honesty I do not even recommend them. They are expensive and put you at a much greater risk for loss, while providing only a few more ranged attack points than the more affordible, expendable ranged head and foot gear. Archer helm- +6 Snake Skin bandana- +4 Snake Skin boots- +3 Spinned helm- +6 Robin Hood- +8 Ranger boots- +8 I have not deemed a fury ammy worth buying, because it does not help me with ranged attack anymore than a glory does, I rarely get hit while ranging so the extra defence is useless. Any gloves below the "barrows" I also do not suggest wearing, as the black vambraces will give more. Just really remember your armor is also your offensive power. Ranged really comes down to, how fast do you want to level and how much are you willing to spend. The speed really depends on the monster you are training on, and the weapon you are using. Monsters: Fire Giants- Fire giants seems to be where alot of people train now. I personally hate them, the rooms are always packed, you have that terrible wait until they are no longer agressive. The drops are mediocre, but really a dragon med does not buy what it used to. Ogres- Oh how I love ogres, the big boy rock crabs. These have 60 hp and next to no defence. The drops really lack, but the exp more than makes up for it. The ogre cage in King Lathas training grounds is great, but often crowded. Blue Dragons- I am fond of blue dragons also, mainly because I see crafting and ranged going hand in hand. If you are looking for a great profit from ranging, I strongly suggest blue dragon, with hides selling for 2.2k each and bones going for 2.7 each you are pulling in 4,900 gp a kill. I suggest you avoid using the heros guild, and instead use the many unused spots underground in the ogre city you unlock during Watchtower. It is about the same distance to a bank and multipule spawns down there. Just watch out for the ogre shamans, they do a large amount of damage if you talk to them. If you insist on going to the heros guild, you will want to bring runes. Black demons- This is where I spend most of my ranged training time. They have low defence, and 157 hp, making them 628 exp per kill. I leave there with an average drop equal to 80k. I usually bring 2k arrows, or my 3 crystal bows when they are at 5/10 or below. Keep in mind what they lack in defence they more than make up for in attack and strength, if you get within striking distance you will be hit for 16's fairly often. There are 3 easy to use range spots located in the tavery doungen and 2 in the edgeville doungen. Greater Demons- Greater demons are great for many reasons, I have made a significant amount of money off of the clue scrolls dropped. They are pretty much a black demon, with less hp, less availability and better drops. There is a greater demon cage in the same underground training spot as the blue dragons, keep in mind you can not retrive your arrows. So be sure to bring telegrab runes. Moss Giants- These are great exp as well, the only problem is they tend to be very crowded in certian areas, mainly the ones by ardy on the way to the waterfall. But with this area being filled it has left the best ranged spot for moss giants open, check out the small moss giant island on the west side of brimhaven. Hell hounds- I hate hell hounds for so many reasons, they have decent defence, low hp for their level, large crowds, slow spawn rate, very limited availability and their only drop is the rare clue scroll. I suggest you find something else to range, if not, bring wind strike runes. Bloodvelds- These can be pretty good exp if you are using knives, they drop alot of blood runes which generally pays for the ammo used and their melee attack is magic based. My main problems with these are the lack of ranged spots, there are really only 3, and limited to one or two spawns each. Dust Devils- I can not stand dust devils, having to lure them to one spot results in low exp. The drops are nice though. Weapons: Magic Short Bow- This is pretty much the "standard issue" 50+ ranger weapon. There are many diffrent ways to train with this, I have tried most all of them. Speed training with MSB- there are two ways to speed train with the magic short, neither are cheap, one is just cheaper. I have tried using bronze arrows at the ogre cage and greater cage, not picking them up or tele grabbing them, I seem to average about 60k exp an hour. I also tried using rune arrows at the ogre cage and greater cage, not picking them up or tele grabbing them, I averaged about 87k exp an hour. Pretty good, but absurdly expensive. Conservative training with the MSB- Simply put, steel arrows, and pick them up. You will average about 40k exp an hour at level 70+ ranged. Crystal Bow- I insult this weapon alot in all of my rants, but I train with it quite a bit, I own 5 crystal seeds which I bought for 150k each from players. At 180k recharge cost it is 72 gp a shot. To go from just completing the quest to a 180k recharge it will cost you 2.52m With this weapon I average about 55k exp an hour, I have a few problems with it, mainly you are unable to recharge when you want, you are forced to wait for it to revert to seed form and the speed is terrible. Seercull- Dont, just dont. Cannon- The cannon is nice, fast, very expensive exp. I have gone through 10k cannon balls at daganoths in a little over an hour before, all of that only getting me about 100k ranged exp. Needless to say, not the best 2 mil I ever spent. Cannons have other uses aside from speed training, they are great for gettiing priority attack on a monster, and for speeding up slayer assignment. All in all, the fast exp people speak of with a cannon is unrealistic. Karils Cross Bow- This weapon is fairly fast, accurate, and does decent damage. The problemswith it are the bolt racks. I go through about 400 bolt racks in a single game of castle wars. That is 120k in 20 min. For things such as duels, castle wars, and fight pits I strongly suggest Karils crossbow. For training I would avoid it, the cost is to great and chances are you will spend more time looking for someone selling the bolt racks than you will using them. Knives- Knives are very fast, easy to find and a great way to get fast exp. The problem is their limited ranged and their low ranged attack. They give +5 ranged attack (iron) but you can pair that with a zammy book in your off hand giving you +13 ranged attack, still fairly low. If you are going for speed training knives are a great way to do it. With iron knives at ogre cage I have hit 64k exp an hour. At 40 gp each they might not be the disposable weapon everyone is looking for, but even with picking them up, you will still be averaging 42k exp an hour. Note: Knives seem to have a lower return rate. Below 70 ranged? Chickens 1-15 Monks 16-30 Everything in port sarim jail( except the black knight) 31-40 Lesser Demons (In Karamja volcano) 41-50 Ogres 51- 70 Be sure you are constantly upgrading your equipment at the lower levels, you need any bonus you can get. Other Useful Information. The archer ring is a great way to get a competitive edge, the +4 ranged bonus might not seem like alot but it could be the push you need to hit through that thick melee armor. At 1.8mil it really is not for everyone, and really only suggested for stake duelers. Highest ranged attack possible is: 190 Robin Hood +8 Ranger Boots +8 Archer Ring +4 Lava Cape +1 Black Chaps +17 Black Body +30 "Barrows" Gloves +12 Crystal Bow 10/10 +100 Glory Amulet Highest ranged defence possible is: 408 Crystal Shield 10/10 +80 Fury amulet +15 Torag Helm +62 Torag plate +132 Torag legs +92 Lava Cape +11 Archer Ring +4 Barrows Gloves +12 Broad Arrows. I love broad arrows, they are the only arrows that no other player can "steal" as they will never show up for them. They hit about as hard as addy arrows. The 55 slayer is definitly worth getting in order to use these. Do not underestimate the bronze. Bronze arrows a great way for cheap, fast ranged exp. Since they are disposable you can easily go to the greater demon or ogre cage and watch the exp roll in. Frequently Asked Questions. Tuski, what is your ranged level? ~I am currently 94 ranged. But Tuski, why would you give away all of the great ranged secrets? ~Because no one ranges anymore, and arrows follys make me happy inside. Dont I see you complaining on the forums all the time? ~Yes, but I like to call it fighting for your rights. -- IB: Lay of the colors will you! They are a pain in the eye! Atleast green. |
