[edit] What are they?
Runes are stackable stones that allow users to cast magic, if they have all the required runes and the appropriate magic level in order to do the spell in question. No matter how many runes you have, you will not gain any weight by carrying them.
[edit] Obtaining Runes
- Runes commonly spawn in various locations around the wilderness. It is usually not worth going and collecting runes by getting spawns because spawns are not fast, are usually in dangerous areas, and you only keep up to 3 runes, if you die.
- They can be bought at magic stores that can be found in places like Varrock, Port Sarim, the Mage Guild
- They are a common drop from some monsters
- Runecrafting allows you to create runes. This is the way in which people most often make a profit. They craft runes from either rune essence or pure essense. Rune essense allows you to craft non-member craftable runes which include fire, earth, water, and air. Pure essense is for crafting all other types of runes which only members can craft.

The four basic elemental runes that can be used and crafted by non-members are:

[edit] Staffs
Some staves have the property of being able to act as a substitute for a rune. Wielding these certain staves allow you to, in essense, have an infinite amount of a specific rune. Air staves give an infinite amount of air runes. Water staves give an infinite amount of water runes. Earth staves give an infinite amount of earth runes. Fire staves give an infinite amount of fire runes.
There are combination staves that give infinite amounts of two runes. They are the lava staff which gives an infinite amount of fire runes and earth runes, the mud staff which gives an infinite amount of earth runes and water runes, and the steam staff which gives an infinite amount of air and water runes.
