[edit] The Runescape Magic Skill
Magic is the ability to cast spells in Runescape. Players who use magic are often referred to as mages. Magic uses items called Runes to cast spells. These spells can have damaging effects, perform tasks, provide transportation, or even freeze opponents.
[edit] How do you find your magic level?
- Go to the skills tab noted by a graph while playing the game.
- Go down to the picture of a magic hat in the first column on the sixth row.
- Your level will be ?/? with the question marks replaced by numbers.
[edit] What is this: 5/5
The first number in the sequence is what your level is at at the moment. It can be drained by certain special attacks. It can be increased by using a prayer or drinking a beer such as a Wizard's Mind Bomb, which adds three to the skill, or a potion such as Magic Essence, which also adds three. The second number is what you have trained the skill to be and is the number that the skill would be without any prayers, drinks, or potions.
[edit] Why level up your magic
Magic is one of the best skills because it attacks a lot better at a lower level. Also a mage in the wilderness will most likely win most of the time over a fighter or ranger depending on your magic level. But the downfall is getting the runes which can be expensive unless you get you runecrafting level up, high enough so you can make all the runes or almost, then it wont cost that much to be a mage. Also raising your mage level to 55 allows to you make a lot of profit off of high alching longbows (Maple,Yew,Magic). But this can be unprofitable, unless you have the required runecrafting level to make Nature Runes(NATS), other wise you will have to fork out 300-360gp per Nature Rune. Magic can be used to teleport you from place to place, instead of sepending time walking. Also, it will allow you to teleport from battles in the wilderness when you're in danger.
[edit] How to level up in magic
Magic is a rather expensive skill. You have to find runes in order to cast your spells and the only ways to get them are a( find them on the ground, b( buy them, or c( runecrafting. This is the least expensive but takes the most time. It is useful to be able to runecraft all of of your runes. Anyway, the best way to train magic is to simply cast the highest combat spell you can afford on an enemy that can't attack you back. The lesser demon on the top floor of the Wizards' Tower is a likely candidate as he cannot retaliate through the fence. It is rather expensive to do this.
1-12
Nothing special here.
You can attack chickens in the area north or Lumbridge. This area is also in a pen, so when you are a low level you can train there. The feathers give you nice cash, too.
You can also kill cows near Lumbridge for experience and stock on the hides they drop for money. They are in a pen, so that is good for mages.
You can go to the Varrock Sewers and get across sewer water rifts and attack things on the other side, depending on your magic level. You should be mostly wind strike oriented because that attack is nice and cheap to use.
13-17
Basically, you can use fire bolt. I would recommend this spell, if you can afford it.
Go to Barbarian Village bar and stand and hit barbarians and hide behind tables. You can choose to go to other bars and do the same thing.
Also, go to Port Sarim jail, and kill your enemy sitting nicely inside a little cage.
17-39
You can use wind bolt and any other type of bolt you would like to use, as you progress in level.
You can fight in the same areas as 13-37 for a little longer. If you choose not to, go to the Wizards' Tower. Go to the third floor and start killing the lesser demon in the cage. You can get great experience. Go to an uncrowded world. This will give you optimal experience. At 33, you can even use telekinetic grab to get rewards from the lesser demon.
39-45
You can either keep training in the wizard's tower which is a great place to train or go to other sites to train.
You can try out your new skill called crumble undead. It is an attack that does MASSIVE damage on undead things like zombies, ghosts, skeletons, etc. The place to use this is definitely the Varrock Sewers. Deeper in the sewer, every single one of these monsters rest. When you enter the sewer, go to the left-most path. At the end, there is a rift of water. You see zombies on the other side. Destroy them all.
You can keep Falador teleporting, if you want for experience.
43/45-55
Camelot teleporting is the way to go, if you are a member. Get a nice air staff and some law runes. Keep teleporting to Camelot like no tomorrow over and over for experience.
If you are not a member, then do superheat item. Get a Staff of Fire and nature runes. This way basically is the same as Camelot teleporting except less convenient. Nats are slightly cheaper than laws, so you may even save some money, though you get 2 less experience per use compared to Camelot teleporting. Also, you need the items to do this. You may want to make iron bars since iron ores produce iron bars 100% of the time instead of 50% of the time.
If you want, you can still Falador teleport, though that may be a bit more expensive and give less experience.
If not, keep fighting in the Wizards' Tower, since it is still a good place to train.
55-99
Get a Staff of Fire and some nats.
High alch all the way. If you are a non-member, high alch steel platemail,.
If you are a member, definitely get yew longbows. They high alch for 768 gp and cost 550-600 to buy. That means with the nat costs, you are only losing 100 gp, or so, per alch.
If you are a non-member, only do this to gain mage levels. You should have no other options whatsoever.
80-99
If you are a member, I guess you can use stun to 99 from 80. Get a mud staff which should be about 1.6 million. This will save you a lot of hassle since you need 12 earth and 12 water runes to cast the spell stun. All you need now is one soul rune. You can get that in the magic guild for ~300 each because not many people buy that in the guild. Go stun to 99. This is to prevent the repetition of high alchemy. You can still use high alchemy if you want. Not much monetary difference beyond staff expenses as the staff can be sold back later.
NOTE: When fighting monsters to train magic, when you are a new mage, you should always find locations that have things to hide behind. You want to take minimal damage, so you don't have to go to the bank for more food often.
NOTE: There is Ancient Magicks and Lunar Magicks as well as the normal spellbook. You need to complete difficult quests in order to unlock these. Ancient Magicks is a powerful form of magic for high level mages that can do various things to multiple enemies. It is suggested that all powerful mages do the quest. It is the greatest type of magic for combat, thus far. Lunar Magicks allows you to heal which is a useful supporting feature for a clan member to have.
Remember staffs are your friend. You can auto-cast by clicking the correct thing on the attack screen. It will kill your enemy.'
