[edit] RuneScape Defence Skill
Defence is one of the 3 main skills in Runescape. It's powerful when combined with attack and strength, since it'll boost your combat level faster than Ranging or Magic.
Defence has the ability to keep you out of trouble or keep you safe because the higher your defence is, the harder it is for your opponent to hit you besides zeros. But in no means does it reduce the damage your opponent is able to hit. IN other words, if you hit between 0-12, then no matter what your opponent's defence is, you'll still be able to hit a 12, only you have a lower chance to do so.
Defence is also boosted by the armour you wear, and of course, the higher level your defence is, the better the armour is that you can wear.
Armour is rated by the metal it's made of, for example: bronze, iron, mithril and so on:
[edit] Defence Level Abilities
| Type of Armour | Required Defence Level |
|---|---|
| Bronze | 1 |
| Iron | 1 |
| Steel | 5 |
| Black | 10 |
| Mithril | 20 |
| Members: Yak-hide | 20 |
| Adamantite | 30 |
| Rune | 40 |
| Members: Granite | 50 |
| Members: Dragon | 60 |
| Members: Elf crystal | 70 |
| Members: Dragonfire Shield | 75 |
Defence also affects Ranging and Magic, since certain armour requires a minimum Defence level to wear it as well as Ranging or Magic. However, Defence is the least popular of the melee skills because no matter what your Ranging/Magic level is, Defence will always affect your combat level, thus disadvantaging pures.
[edit] How to train your Defence
The best way to train defence is to select a method of attack that is described as defensive. This gives 4 experience per damage dealt. It's usually the last attack option, generally called "Block". The slower method is to use controlled attacks, mode available only with scimitars and swords. This method gives 1.33 experience to attack, defence, and strength per damage dealt. For fast defence experience, the first method is recommended.
When using ranging or magic, you can also train your defence, by switching to "Longrange" mode with ranging, or with "Defence + Magic" mode with magic. These methods split 50/50 between Defence and Magic/Ranging (2/2 exp per damage)
[edit] How do you find your defence level?
- Go to the skills tab noted by a graph while playing the game.
- Go down to the picture of a shield in the first column on the third row.
- Your level will be ?/? with the question marks replaced by numbers.
[edit] What is this: ?/?
The first number in the sequence is what your level is at at the moment. It can be drained by certain spells or special attacks. It can be increased by using a prayer or drinking a potion such as a defence potion. The second number is what you have trained the skill to be and is the number that the skill would be without any spells, prayers, or potions.
[edit] Ways of using Defence
There is a certain pure type where the character wither has a level 1 defence or the minium for good armour. They will then have a high enough attack level to be able to wield the best weapon for them and then will have high strength. They do this because they will have a small combat level but they will be able to hit very high. This is mainly for pkers so people will challenge them and then die because they weren't expecting to be hit so high. You should be aware of these in the wilderness so you don't rush into a fight with them.
