Moneymaking
Coal is one of the better items to merchant. It is not worth much, but it is popular and by buying it for 50-100gp and selling it for 100-200gp, the gold begins to build up. I made 100k in 30 minutes easily. Coal does not give you much cash through alchemy, so it is not worth the nature rune.
Mining/Smithing
Level 30 mining is required to mine coal. Mining coal and selling the raw ore is not recommended unless you have a very good pickaxe and level 70-99 mining. Coal can be used to smelt steel bars(lvl 30), mithril bars(lvl 50), adamant bars(lvl 70), or runite bars(lvl 85).
