Clan Chat is a system that Jagex added to Runescape in August of 2007. It allows everyone in the chat to hear what anyone else in the chat says, regardless of location and world.

Joining a Chat

There are three easy steps to join a chat channel.

1. Click the Image:Clan_Chat.gif icon in the bottom left corner of the control panel. See the image to the right.

2. Click the button that says "Join Chat."

3. Type the name of the player whose chat you wish to join. This is the owner's name, not the name of the chat channel.

To talk on the chat, put a "/" in front of anything you want to say. If you are unable to talk on the chat, the owner has probably set it up so that you can not talk at your current rank.

Troubleshooting

There are several reasons you may not be able to join a chat:

1. The channel is already full (100 is the maximum). However, if the channel is full and you have a higher rank than someone else in the clan, you will take their place.

2. You have been "kicked" from the channel.

3. You are on the owner's ignore list, banning you from joining.

4. The owner has set it up so that you may not join.

5. The player whose name you entered does not have a chat channel.

Setting up your own Chat

Setting up your own Chat Channel is slightly more difficult, but still easy. To set up a channel in your name, log in, click the Clan Chat symbol, and then click "Clan Setup."

A box will open which looks somewhat like this:

Clan Name

The name of your chat channel. You will not have a chat channel until you name this. To name it, simple click the "Clan Name" button and type the name of your clan.

Who can enter Chat?

If you right click on this button, it will bring up a list of who will be able to join the chat. You can set it so anyone in Runescape can join, anyone on your friends list can join, and anyone with a certain rank or above can join. More on Ranks later.

Who can talk on Chat?

Just because someone can join the chat and listen, doesn't mean they can talk on the chat. This has a similar menu if you right click on it, and you can set this.

Who can kick on Chat?

Just like the others, this also has a menu, and you can set it so that anyone above a certain rank can "kick" on the chat. More about kicking later.

Friends List

The Friends List is a list of all the people on your normal Friends List, and their current rank in the clan. To change a rank, right click on the rank of the person whose rank you wish to change, and select the new rank. Only people on your friends list will have ranks.

Ranks

In some clans, ranks are very important, in others they don't matter. People above a certain rank may have the privilege of "kicking" on the chat, just as people below a certain rank may be unable to talk on the chat or even join. There are 8 ranks, listed here with their symbols.

You can view anyone's rank by going to the clan interface. If they are online and in the clan, you will see a rank symbol next to their name. If they have no symbol, they are not on the owner's friends list.

Kicking

Any player with a rank at or above that of which the owner has set as "Who can Kick?" can kick people with a lower rank from the chat. This is used if someone is abusing the chat channel. Someone who has been kicked cannot join the chat again for one hour. If a more permanent ban is needed, the owner can add that person to his/her ignore list.

If everyone leaves the chat, all kicks will be lifted, regardless of the time.

LootShare

This feature was released on October 16,2007. It allows players who are in the same clan to distribute the riches from monster drops easily and efficiently. Even if you don't receive anything at one time, your chances of getting a drop are increased. Anybody within a 16 square distance who is in the clan and has loot share enabled will be able to recieve it.
